Liam Neeson (Taken) has joined "The Next Three Days," a thriller directed by Paul Haggis, the man behind the Oscar-winning film "Crash."

"Three Days" began photography last Friday, with Russell Crowe playing a teacher whose wife (Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn’t commit. Several years of incarceration leaves her suicidal and he plots to break her out. Neeson plays an ex-con who has broken out of jail multiple times, has written a book about it, and shows the teacher how it's done.

Russell in "The Next Three Days"

Variety reports that Russell has signed to star in "The Next Three Days", a remake of the French film Por Elle, for Crash director Paul Haggis. Production is set to begin in Pittsburgh in late September.

Crowe will play a teacher whose wife is arrested and convicted of a murder she says she did not commit. He comes up with a desperate plan to free her.

Haggis told Daily Variety that the drama needed an actor who can thrive as an Everyman who rises when faced with an extraordinary circumstance, and Crowe was his top choice.

"We've seen him as the gladiator, but he has embodied the Everyman in so many pictures," Haggis said.

Haggis said the film explores deeper themes of faith and belief.

Said Haggis: "The deeper theme here is, would you save the woman you loved if you knew that by doing so, you would turn into a man that woman could no longer love?"
