Russell News

There've been several interesting pieces of news on Russell today, so I thought I'd supply links to all of them, rather than concentrating on one!

The Courier Mail has a short article on Russell's music, with comments by singer-songwriter John Williamson.

There's a brief story at Digital Spy on Russell and Ridley Scott's collaborations.

Crowe, Scott 'can't escape Gladiator'

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has a page up for Russell's star on the Walk of Fame.

There's a really good two page article in The Times Online called Behind the scenes of a brand new Robin Hood. Lots of commentary from Russell!

"HBO First Look: Robin Hood" will begin airing on May 4th at 9:45 pm. There's a complete schedule at the website here.

Russell Keeps On Giving

Battering ram

Russell continues his spirit of giving by having a prop from Robin Hood given to the Clanranald Trust, a battle re-enactment group in Scotland. According to the BBC:

Crowe film prop given to charity

The Clanranald Trust's chief executive officer, Charlie Allan, became friends with Russell when he portrayed a German warrior in Gladiator. Be sure to visit their website, which is fascinating and educational.

Russell In Empire Magazine

The April issue of Empire Magazine features a six-page spread on Russell, including an interview with Martyn Palmer, who first interviewed him 19 years ago. The interview was done during the filming of State of Play in Washington, D.C. Among other things, Russell talks about working with Ridley Scott and about gaining weight for roles. The spread also includes some great pictures, and a list of the Top 5 Russell Crowe Performances, selected by Dan Jolin. The April issue will be available in stores Thursday, February 26.

"Russell Crowe tells us about his triumphs, the things he missed out on and his turn in accomplished new thriller State of Play. Crowe has heralded a return of the rugged and brooding thinking man to Hollywood screens, from his Oscar-winning turn as Gladiator Maximus to the introverted and brilliant mathematician John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. He also tells us why Ridley Scott's Nottingham fits the bill to be one of his next projects--because "It's Robin Hood, mate. I mean, come on!""

Russell's Directors

We all know that Russell has done great work with Ridley Scott(American Gangster, A Good Year, Gladiator), Ron Howard(Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind), James Mangold(3:10 To Yuma), Peter Weir(Master&Commander), Michael Mann(The Insider), and every other director with whom he's worked. Now, is there a director with whom you'd like to see him work that he hasn't before?

Let us know which director below you'd like to see him team up with, or give us another idea if you don't see yours listed!

Gladiator Violence

The website Top Tenz, which publishes Top Ten lists of everything from comic book villains to the least smartest dogs(?)has Gladiator listed at No. 2 on it's Top Ten Violent Films list. Any list like this is, of course, arguable. I can think of several films I would have added to the list and several whose positions I would have changed, but this is their list not mine! Here's what the writer had to say about Gladiator:

This film was a triumph, a perfect blending of plot, atmosphere, action and dimensional characters. Director Ridley Scott created an eerie, ethereal atmosphere in the opening battle sequence, with amazing cinematography and stunning realism. Russell Crowe brought a rugged, believable quality to his portrayal of Maximus. As well, a stellar performance by Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus, the bitter, jealous son of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, was a highlight of this violent spectacle.

And here's their entire list:

10. Kill Bill (Vols 1&2)
9. Rambo
8. Saving Private Ryan
7. Kingdom of Heaven
6. Natural Born Killers
5. War of the Worlds
4. Troy
3. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. Gladiator
1. 300
