"He had been planning to join Manly, the glamour club from Sydney's northern beaches whose former forward Steve Menzies was a team-mate at Bradford last season and constantly in his ear, until he received a call on his mobile in late July. "We were down in Wales playing Celtic Crusaders and I was getting a massage when the ePhone went," he recalls, revealing that he almost hung up when the caller introduced himself as "Russell – Russell Crowe from South Sydney"."
Having met Rabbitohs coach Jason Taylor three weeks ago, Crocker received the now obligatory phone call from Russell Crowe - reserved for prized signings - urging him to come aboard.
And while there was plenty of talk about premierships, winning cultures and Bunnies history, it was Crowe's 1993 movie Silver Brumby that dominated conversation.
"We actually spoke about horses . . . my wife's (Sally Carne) favour- ite child movie was one of Russell's first movies, so we had a good chat about that actually," Crocker said yesterday, after signing a 3½-year deal, believed to be worth up to $250,000 a season.
"It was pretty funny actually. Probably not what you'd expect."

South Sydney has registered its biggest win over the Roosters in 57 years, belting its closest rival 52-12 before a big crowd at the Sydney Football Stadium.
When Sutton's perfectly weighted crossfield kick was plucked out of the air by Fetuli Talanoa and planted centimetres from the deadball line, the Bunnies were on their way to a 24-6 advantage with less than half an hour gone.
That prompted Souths owner Russell Crowe to deliver a Roman coliseum-style thumbs down to Roosters fans.
