The match also featured the debut of Sam Burgess as part of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Sam scored Souths' first try of the match, as they went on to win 42-12!

Prior to the match, Russell presented Sam with a club membership card in the name of his father, Mark Burgess, a former rugby league player and coach in England.

Michael Crocker signs with South Sydney Rabbitohs

Having met Rabbitohs coach Jason Taylor three weeks ago, Crocker received the now obligatory phone call from Russell Crowe - reserved for prized signings - urging him to come aboard.

And while there was plenty of talk about premierships, winning cultures and Bunnies history, it was Crowe's 1993 movie Silver Brumby that dominated conversation.

"We actually spoke about horses . . . my wife's (Sally Carne) favour- ite child movie was one of Russell's first movies, so we had a good chat about that actually," Crocker said yesterday, after signing a 3½-year deal, believed to be worth up to $250,000 a season.

"It was pretty funny actually. Probably not what you'd expect."

Russell To Appear on The Footy Show

According to The Daily Telegraph, Russell is set to appear on Nine Network's "The Footy Show" next Thursday. He will join panellists Andrew Voss, Fatty Vautin, and Matthew Johns to answer questions on rugby league.

``Russell Crowe is on the first week ... I hear he has asked for Fatty's and my books so he could read up on us and fire off some questions at us as well,'' Johns said. ``It should be interesting.''

Rabbitohs Win Charity Shield

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won back-to-back Charity Shields, defeating the St. George Illawarra 18-6 on February 28. The victory came in front of the third-largest crowd in Charity Shield history--25,871 at ANZ Stadium. Congratulations to the Rabbitohs!

The Rabbitohs have the first sell-out of rugby league for 2009! A crowd of 5000 will view the Rabbitohs "members only" match against Wests Tigers on February 8th.

Redfern Return a Sellout

Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said the club could have sold out the ground twice over, with the final 300 tickets unwanted by Tigers members snapped up last week.

"We could have got 8,000 or 10,000 if we'd wanted to but we only had 5,000 to do it without putting in temporary grandstands,'' Richardson said. "It's a very positive start to the season and there's lots of people looking forward to returning to Redfern.

"Every fan there is going to be a ticketed member - it's a first in rugby league. We sold out our half of the tickets a month and a half ago, the last ones were just the extra 300 we got back from the Tigers.''

The video chronicling the South Sydney Rabbitohs return to Redfern Oval on January 5th is now up on the Rabbitoh's official site. The above picture is a screen capture from the vid (thanks to a friend of mine named David, who's a rabid sports fan).

Also, a belated Happy 101st Birthday to the Rabbitohs! The South Sydney Rugby League Club was formed on January 17, 1908!


And, in other great news for the Rabbitohs, ticketed membership is now at 6660 as of 9 a.m. this morning, according to the official site. This surpasses the 2008 ticketed membership. The Rabbitohs now have a total of 11,506 ticketed and non-ticketed members. Way to go!

Russell's Message to South Sydney Fans

The media today is full of Russell's video message to members and fans of his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs. In it, Russell speaks about the need for the team to become more self-sufficient and to stand on its own financially. Here is a portion of his message to members:

"I'm always going to be a Souths' boy, that won't change," he says. "Next week someone will have to find a couple of hundred grand for gym equipment, 50 or 60 [thousand] more for interior fit-out costs at Redfern [Oval], individual named lockers, ice baths built in, inspirational things, huge photographs, boards with every player from every premiership we've ever won, team photos from every year we have on record, inspirational things the players will benefit from, and an atmosphere which brings them inside 100 years of history.

"Now don't worry about the bill, between generous sponsors and myself, we'll get it done this time. I will tell you this, though, I won't continue to put the type of cash I've had to into Souths so far, forever. The business has to begin to stand on its own. Be quite sure that is not an emotional issue for me, it is what it is."

This has brought criticism from some, like chronic complainer George Piggins, whose comments about Russell's message can be read at the Melbourne Herald Sun. One of Piggins' remarks was that he "always worried about what would happen if the novelty wore off." Who is Piggins kidding?

Russell has put millions of his own money into the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He has always let it be known that he was a passionate fan. That same article contains a poll: Is Rusty a Scrooge or a realist? A full 88% of those voting so far are more realistic than Piggins, voting that Russell, as well as CEO Shane Richardson and Chairman Nick Pappas (who requested that Russell send the message), is right to expect the team to become more self-sufficient.

No one fan-not even Russell Crowe-can solely fianance the team forever. Other fans and members need to help support their team.
