SOUTH Sydney training has been pretty funky at times in recent years with co-owner Russell Crowe taking a hands-on approach with the NRL club.

Ten-pin bowling, bike rides and a fly-on-the-wall documentary were all part of being one of Crowe's glamorous Rabbitohs under youthful ex-coach Jason Taylor.

Distracting or not for the players, it seems that won't change under new mentor - and NRL veteran - John Lang.

The Rabbitohs are in Coffs Harbour, near to where Crowe owns a property, to prepare for Saturday's trial against the Gold Coast.

The north coast visit has become a tradition since the Hollywood star took over.

Injured Essendon Bombers in TV show

HeraldSun: ESSENDON will open its doors to TV crews like never before this season for a warts-and-all program devised by Russell Crowe.

The Bombers are the first AFL club to agree to take part in Damage Control, a sports version of real-life hospital drama RPA.

To be screened in prime time on Channel Seven late in the season, the program will cover every Bomber injury as it happens on gameday and track each victim's rehabilitation.

Producers of the program, Beyond International, are in discussions with two other Melbourne-based AFL clubs, with at least one more poised to join the Bombers before the season starts.

Damage Control cameras are already embedded at A-League club Melbourne Victory and will today film the knee reconstruction of Matthew Kemp.

Crowe's NRL club South Sydney is also involved, and elite netball team the New South Wales Swifts.

David Alrich, co-executive producer with Crowe, yesterday said the constant access provided by the Bombers to injured players was unprecedented.

"Players are a club's most important asset . . . this is a chance like never before to see how they are looked after," Alrich said.

The medical staff at Windy Hill will gain a national profile as the show tracks training, rehabilitation, and surgery.

It is a major departure from traditional policy for Essendon. Injuries were often a taboo subject under former coach Kevin Sheedy, with players missing with the "Windy Hill" flu common.

But because footage will be stockpiled, and the program will not screen for several months, in-house secrets will not be revealed in the lead-up to matches.

Hollywood star Crowe will also be the narrator.

The match also featured the debut of Sam Burgess as part of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Sam scored Souths' first try of the match, as they went on to win 42-12!

Prior to the match, Russell presented Sam with a club membership card in the name of his father, Mark Burgess, a former rugby league player and coach in England.

Michael Crocker signs with South Sydney Rabbitohs

Having met Rabbitohs coach Jason Taylor three weeks ago, Crocker received the now obligatory phone call from Russell Crowe - reserved for prized signings - urging him to come aboard.

And while there was plenty of talk about premierships, winning cultures and Bunnies history, it was Crowe's 1993 movie Silver Brumby that dominated conversation.

"We actually spoke about horses . . . my wife's (Sally Carne) favour- ite child movie was one of Russell's first movies, so we had a good chat about that actually," Crocker said yesterday, after signing a 3½-year deal, believed to be worth up to $250,000 a season.

"It was pretty funny actually. Probably not what you'd expect."

Rabbitohs Win Latest Match

The Rabbitohs won their latest match against the Newcastle Knights 22-12! Craig Wing scored two tries for the Rabbitohs, even after finding out at 9am that his beloved grandmother had passed away. It was a come-from-behind victory for the Rabbitohs, who scored their 22 points in the final 23 minutes of the game!

The Rabbitohs next match will be against the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday, April 5th.

Russell To Appear on The Footy Show

According to The Daily Telegraph, Russell is set to appear on Nine Network's "The Footy Show" next Thursday. He will join panellists Andrew Voss, Fatty Vautin, and Matthew Johns to answer questions on rugby league.

``Russell Crowe is on the first week ... I hear he has asked for Fatty's and my books so he could read up on us and fire off some questions at us as well,'' Johns said. ``It should be interesting.''

Rabbitohs Win Charity Shield

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won back-to-back Charity Shields, defeating the St. George Illawarra 18-6 on February 28. The victory came in front of the third-largest crowd in Charity Shield history--25,871 at ANZ Stadium. Congratulations to the Rabbitohs!
